Outside of school and work, what kinds of books do you read the most?

After graduating, I noticed a shift in my reading habits\. In school, most of the books I read were assigned readings, and as an anthropology major, I spent a lot of time reading theoretical and academic texts\. Now I find myself exploring a much wider range of books\.

What do you wish you have more time for?

I find myself constantly feeling like I don’t have enough time to read\. I end up squeezing reading into fragmented moments throughout the day, which often interrupts the flow of a book\. Somehow, I can never seem to set aside dedicated time just for reading\. And even when I do have free time, other things take precedence or simply feel more appealing\.

Figuring out my life\.

Hi all\! I’m a UCLA student studying business economics, currently interested in pursuing a career in investment banking\. I’m hoping to learn from people with different experiences, explore new opportunities, and connect with people who are passionate about the finance industry\. Something I’ve been thinking about lately is how people figure out which career path is right for them\. It’s easy to research different industries, but I feel like actually talking to people in your field of interest and trying things out yourself is what helps you understand what a career is really like\. As a freshmen in college, I’m still in the process of figuring out my life\. So I’d love to hear from you all: \-For those of you who have explored different fields, what helped you figure out what you wanted to pursue? \-if you already have a set career plan set in place, what’s something is something you’re working towards or excited about?

Three Chicago Schools, One City \-9

**02\. Sociology and the City as a Laboratory**

The Chicago School of Sociology emerged in a different setting\. The University of Chicago established its sociology department in 1892, and by the 1910s and 1920s Robert E\. Park, Ernest Burgess, and their students were using Chicago as a primary site of investigation\.² Rapid immigration, industrialization, segregation, labor mobility, and metropolitan expansion were visible within a relatively compressed geography\. Chicago offered something close to a live record of urban transformation\.

Park argued that the city should be studied through direct observation rather than treated only as an abstract social problem\. The resulting research used neighborhood surveys, interviews, maps, census data, and life histories\. Park, Burgess, and Roderick McKenzie’s The City, published in 1925, combined this empirical work with attempts to identify recurring spatial and social processes\.⁶ Burgess’s concentric\-zone model became its most familiar diagram, interpreting urban growth through expansion, competition, and succession\. Louis Wirth later shifted attention toward urbanism as a social condition, asking how scale, density, and heterogeneity shaped relationships in everyday life\.⁷

The school’s importance is therefore methodological as much as theoretical\. Streets, housing districts, immigrant neighborhoods, commercial areas, and institutions became evidence\. The city was not merely a backdrop for society\. Its spatial organization was one way of reading social relations\. For architecture, that shift remains significant because it suggests that a neighborhood cannot be understood only through a plan or design intention\. Space is also occupied and transformed by processes that no single designer controls\.

Three Chicago Schools, One City \-8

**01\. Architecture and the Problem of Building Up**

The First Chicago School developed when the city’s commercial center was growing faster than older building types could comfortably accommodate\. Rising land values in the Loop, elevators, iron and steel construction, and new foundation systems made taller office buildings both technically possible and economically attractive\.¹ The 1871 fire mattered because it accelerated rebuilding and forced new questions about fireproof construction, but the familiar story that the fire simply “created” the skyscraper is too neat\. The earliest post\-fire buildings remained relatively conventional\. The experiments associated with the Chicago School emerged mainly in the 1880s\.

William Le Baron Jenney, Burnham and Root, Adler and Sullivan, and Holabird and Roche explored how the new tall office building should work and look\. Jenney’s Home Insurance Building of 1885 is often described as the first skyscraper because of its metal\-frame construction, although recent scholarship has challenged the simplicity of that origin story\.⁵ Sullivan approached the problem differently\. In “The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered,” he began with business demand, elevators, steel, congestion, and land value before asking what architectural expression should follow from those conditions\.⁴

This is what makes the Chicago School more interesting than a recognizable façade style\. The skyscraper emerged through developers, engineers, contractors, manufacturers, tenants, and architects\. Form was produced inside a larger system of urban growth and construction\. Chicago turned that practical pressure into an architectural question: if the modern city was becoming vertical, what kind of building could make that new condition legible?

Title: How do you weight customer concentration in a SWOT analysis?

I’m working through a SWOT analysis for a small, family\-owned commercial services business (case study exercise)\. The founder is retiring, his spouse works in the business and is also leaving, but the next generation is staying on to run operations\. The family also plans to retain the real estate and lease it back to the buyer\. The customer base is loyal but concentrated: no single customer is over 10% of revenue, but the top ten together represent about half of revenue, and several of those relationships are long\-standing\. One of the largest contracts is up for renewal in the near term\. My question for the forum: How do you weight customer concentration in a SWOT? I’m not looking for a valuation opinion, just trying to make sure my SWOT framework is sound before I finalize the analysis\. Curious how others handle this\.

Three Chicago Schools, One City \-7

Here, “schools” means schools of thought, not universities\. Architecture, sociology, and economics each developed a distinct “Chicago School,” but at different moments and through different institutions\. The architectural school emerged in the late nineteenth century around the problem of the tall commercial building\. The sociological school took shape at the University of Chicago in the early twentieth century, where researchers treated the city itself as a field site\. The economic school became especially influential after the Second World War through work on price theory, markets, regulation, and individual choice\.¹²³

Putting them together can be misleading if it suggests a single Chicago philosophy\. The labels are partly retrospective\. Chicago sociologists did not originally present themselves as a unified “school,” and historians of economics still debate which generations and ideas the Chicago School label actually includes\.²³ The architectural group was also less unified than the name implies\. Burnham and Root, Adler and Sullivan, Jenney, and Holabird and Roche shared a city and a new building problem, not one doctrine\.

The more useful question is why the same city repeatedly became a place where new ways of thinking acquired the name “Chicago\.” From the nineteenth century onward, Chicago compressed rapid growth, migration, industrial production, land speculation, transportation networks, and institutional experimentation into an unusually visible form\. The three schools studied different things, but each confronted systems that older models struggled to explain\. Architecture asked how to build the modern commercial city\. Sociology asked how people and communities organized themselves within it\. Economics later asked how dispersed choices could be coordinated through markets and institutions\. Their connection begins less with direct influence than with a shared setting that made modernity difficult to ignore\.

### [Built into Words \#12 \| SCREEN \| VISIBILITY](<https://www.4um.com/post/SJaOfn>)

Built into Words [\#12](<https://www.4um.com/search>) \| SCREEN \| VISIBILITY

The screen in your hand has a distant relative: a piece of furniture placed between someone and a fireplace\.

In fourteenth\-century English, *screne* meant an upright barrier against heat or drafts\. The word probably came through French, though its earlier origin is uncertain\. Eighteenth\-century *hand screens* protected faces from open fires, while folding screens stood by doorways to stop cold air\.

Architectural screens need not be opaque\. In historic Cairo, wooden *mashrabiyya* latticework covered windows, balconies, and partitions\. Small turned\-wood pieces formed intricate grids, admitting ventilation and filtering sunlight while limiting views into domestic interiors\. Unlike a wall, the lattice separated spaces without sealing them off\.

By 1810, *screen* also meant a surface receiving projected images\. The seventeenth\-century magic lantern projected pictures painted on glass through a lens onto a wall or screen\. The viewer no longer looked past the barrier, but directly at the image appearing on it\.

Cinema made that surface central to a new building type\. Early films appeared in entertainment halls; dedicated movie theaters became widespread in the early twentieth century\. Projection booths, seating rows, sightlines, and darkened auditoriums were arranged around a common view of the screen\.

Television and computer screens kept the name but produced images electronically, without a projector\. Graphical interfaces filled displays with overlapping windows, icons, and menus\. The image was no longer fixed by a projectionist: its viewer could rearrange it\.

On a touchscreen, the image surface is also an input device\. The same rectangle can display a map, accept a swipe, and register a tap to change its contents\.

**NOTATION**

*screen*, noun and verb /skriːn/
Middle English *screne*, probably via Old North French *escren*
Architectural meaning: a partition controlling exposure, air, light, or views
Meaning range: protective barrier → visual filter → projection surface → electronic display

Sharing Poetry :)

In addition to advertising, I also have a deep love for poetry\. This is something I wrote recently for my poetry workshop class\. As the class focuses on poetic forms, this poem is a pantoum and is characterized by a series of four line stanzas (or quatrains)\. The poem repeats the second and fourth lines of each stanza as the first and third of the next stanza\.

In my version, the second and fourth lines of the first stanza returns as the second and fourth lines of the last stanza, which differs from the traditional form of a pantoum\. My version also has a unique rhyme scheme: ABAB BCBC CDCD DEDE FBFB\. Anyway, enough explaining\. Read the poem and tell me what you think or what your interpretation is in comments\!

***Call and Receive***

**9/22 \- 9/26**

**are you there, knocking**

**steel knuckles against the frame?**

**the noise, softened by my coughing**

**and the mute calling of my name\.**

**steel knuckles against the frame**

**make a game of call and receive**

**and the mute sounding of my name\.**

**it’s been years since I began to grieve**

**the game of call and receive**

**I’ve long since kept score\.**

**it’s been years since I started to grieve**

**I almost don’t remember anymore,**

**but I’ve long since kept score**

**all the ways I’ve spent a day**

**I almost don’t remember anymore**

**the smell of breeze before decay\.**

**but I keep the game going, playing**

**steel knuckles against the frame**

**bloodied and white bone fraying**

**your mute voice finally calling my name\.**

Critique of Critique 10

**10\. The Different Speeds of Thought and Building**

A more consistent distinction across this literature concerns the different speeds at which architectural discourse and material production can change\. A new historical interpretation, theoretical vocabulary, or representational method can circulate relatively quickly through schools, journals, exhibitions, and professional discourse\. Buildings remain dependent on land, finance, codes, procurement, construction, occupation, and long term maintenance\.

Cuff and Till are particularly important because they treat these conditions not as external disturbances to an otherwise autonomous design process, but as constitutive parts of architectural production\.¹¹ ¹² Tafuri reaches a related problem from a different theoretical direction by locating architectural ideology within wider systems of economic production\.⁹ The distance between conceptual change and material transformation is therefore partly built into the institutional structure of architecture itself\.

For this reason, the historical literature does not support a simple claim that architecture became trapped in criticism and consequently lost the capacity to innovate\. Criticism has served different purposes at different moments\. It distinguished modernism from inherited conventions, revised architectural history, expanded the category of precedent, questioned professional ideology, examined architectural autonomy, and eventually turned its attention toward its own disciplinary methods\.

A critique of critique is therefore more useful as a historiographical problem than as an argument against criticism\. It asks how critique became one of architecture's principal mechanisms for producing knowledge, while recognizing that changes in architectural thought and changes in the built environment operate through different institutions, different forms of agency, and different temporal scales\.
